Tritonia primarily acquires literature to support research and education at the University of Vaasa requested by teaching staff at the university. Acquisition requests can be made online.

The library acquires the literature, adds the items to the library catalogue and handles the invoice processing for purchases made through the library budget. The university units should check and approve invoices concerning items requested for staff use.

Textbooks (loan period 14 days)

Books included in the degree programmes are defined as textbooks (print books, e-books). Textbooks are primarily acquired as e-books. Please check the user rights of the e-books with the library. If an e-book is ordered as textbook, the library will also acquire a print copy both to the short loan collection and the textbook collection. More information regarding e-books can be found in our e-book guide.

The library acquires at least one textbook per every six students, one short loan copy and one teacher’s copy to the university unit, if there isn't already a teacher's copy at the unit or if no e-book is found. If more than one teacher’s copy is needed, extra copies are paid by the Schools.

Textbooks for the autumn term are to be requested by May 31. Textbooks for the spring term are to be requested by November 30. Teachers should check before the beginning of the term that the library's textbook collection includes a sufficient number of textbooks according to the number of students at each course, and, if necessary, request more books. If there are several editions of the book, the study guide should include information on which editions are accepted as textbooks.

Textbooks are removed from the collections after not being included in the study guides for five (5) years. Of the removed textbooks, 1-2 copies are placed in the general collection.

Research literature (loan period 28 days)

To Tritonia's general collection, the library primarily acquires literature to support education and research. Purchase requests can be made by university staff, researchers and students, as well as by other customers.

Personal researchers’ loan (loan period 2 months)

Teaching and research staff at the university can order new books as personal researchers’ loans and borrow them for two months (56 days). The person on whose name the researchers' loan is registered is responsible for the loan. The personal researchers’ loans service applies only to newly acquired books. When the requested literature has arrived to the library, it will be registered on loan to the person that has requested it and sent by internal mail, if he or she so wishes.

Project loans (loan period 1 year)

Literature paid out of project funds is acquired in the same way as other literature. Acquisition requests can be made by the project researchers. When making an acquisition request, project number must be included.

The items are registered as project loans. The loan period for project loans is one year (365 days). When the requested literature has arrived to the library, it will be registered on loan to the person that has requested it and sent by internal mail, if he or she so wishes. Project loans can be renewed, if the project continues, and they cannot be reserved. The person on whose name the project loan is registered is responsible for the loan. When the items are no longer needed for the project, they will be transferred to the general collection.

Books for staff use

The university units can order literature through Tritonia to be placed at the units' own reference libraries. Books for staff use will be added to the library database. They will be paid by the Schools and the literature orders must be accepted by the head of the School (dean).

Journals

Journals are acquired to support education and research at the university. Journals are acquired as e-journals, when possible. Journals acquired to the university units are paid by the Schools.
