This research paper focuses on model-based approach as a part of the decision-making process on product development project resourcing and resource usage via introducing and analyzing the main methodologies, implications, and integrations related to the subject, in order to optimize the case company’s future resourcing and resource capacity understanding. Additionally, the research emphasizes the determination of factors affecting the case company’s product development project resourcing and resource usage optimization in order to develop a model for product development project resourcing. The product development environment can be considered an especially hard one to estimate the resourcing, due to the uniqueness and uncertainty of executed activities. Therefore, the theoretical studies aimed for development guidelines and suggested improvement methodologies are applied to the research and combined with case company specific attributes in order to define the model and the procedures to follow.

The empirical part of the research focuses on current state analysis considering the resource management in the case company, more in depth analysis on four product development productization projects inside the case company and the development of the product development productization project resourcing model and the determination of dependencies regarding it. The study suggests that the model-based approach should be used as a part of decision-making process considering the product development project resourcing and resource allocations inside the case company, in order to optimize the future resourcing and resource capacity understanding.
