We are responsible for the teaching of information literacy included in the curricula at the University of Vaasa, VAMK and Novia. For detailed course schedules, check your own university’s study guide, also registration to the courses takes place in the university’s own system. We organise also other sessions on information searching on request in Finnish, Swedish and English.
For students and staff at the University of Vaasa, VAMK and Novia, teaching and guidance are free of charge. For others, teaching sessions are charged in accordance to our service prices.
Courses for students at the University of Vaasa
First-year students complete the compulsory course Searching for Scientific Information where we go through library services and essential sources of information needed during university studies. In addition, students learn the principles of information searching, the basic techniques of information retrieval, the characteristics of scientific information and the ethical use of information in the scientific community. The course is held in Finnish and English.
In the bachelor’s and master’s seminar stage, another course in information searching is mandatory for some students. Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to critically evaluate information sources and information retrieval. They are able to search for information from key sources in their field using advanced search techniques and to follow good scientific practices. The course is held in Finnish and English.

Teaching for students at VAMK
In the orientation course for first-year students, we cover Tritonia and information searching. During the session, students get to know the library and its services, the Tritonia Finna search service, the basic techniques of information retrieval as well as the sources of information provided by the library.
For students writing their thesis, we offer guidance, for example, in connection with the research methodology course or similar. The focus is on information retrieval and field-specific sources of information. The content can be agreed upon in more detail with the teacher. Guidance in information searching can also be implemented with other teaching, for example, in relation to a topic covered in a course.

Information literacy education for students at Novia
Courses in information skills for new students are arranged in collaboration with the degree programs according to their needs and the current course-plan. The sessions in information searching are arranged in Swedish and English.
The sessions focus on the essential sources of information used in higher education. It includes a review of the Tritonia-Finna search service and how to find reliable sources using effective search strategies. In addition, the characteristics of scientific information and the ethical handling of information in academic contexts is discussed.
Advanced courses in information literacy are arranged for students later during their studies and in consultation with the degree programs. These are arranged primarily for students writing their thesis, but can also be implemented for example in relation to a topic covered in a course.
